The Weekend Update

Some this won't be as funny as the SNL version but hey here goes. If there is one thing that has become clear is that we all have our own preferences. The lens page is the perfect example. Some like the new groupings while others prefer the old listing style. As mentioned in an earlier post we're developing some alternative views for that page to account for the various style preferences. Look for that in a couple of weeks.

Also, some comments about the accessory images. In an effort to get the site live we used a generic accessory shot for a couple dozen of the hundred accessories that we make available. We're also working on reshooting those to be specific to the product. So those will start to roll out soon.

The homepage experience is getting a fresh update in the coming weeks as mentioned previously. We're going to reduce the flash animation to get to the end state quicker, which ultimately means faster loading times.

We're also starting the production of a couple dozen technology demonstrations to give visitors a better understanding of how Nikon products take the best pictures possible. We have our list that we are starting with but if there are topics or technology that you would like to see demonstrations on here is your shot....

First, I want to start out by saying that I love the blog and keeping us updated with happenings around Nikon.

I think it would be interesting to make the page dynamic based upon our Nikon user ID. This would include information based on equipment that we currently own as well as add a 'wish list' capability where updates or information can be displayed on that equipment as well.

I'm not a web developer but other web sites have similar capabilities.

Just a thought and love the blog and the updates you all provide.

BTW, any word on Capture NX 2.0 coming out soon? :)

Good ideas Lou. We've got some other features for that type of platform as it came up during our strategic planning sessions. We'll spend some time discussing this in detail on the blog later this spring.

Agree with Lou and wish the wish list :)

Hello,

Have you checked FireFox how they display your site, especially character size is set big(ger)? It's quite different when seen by IE and FF.

I'm using FF2 and find "camera" of "compact digital camera" at left frame of http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Digital-SLR/ is missing when I set character size bigger.

See the market share of IE7 and FF2 by Xiti monitor.

Or see post at http://dramrollonline.blogspot.com/2008/02/firefox2-vs-ie7.html, though it's all in Japanese.

When you update your page you should also include a link to the Nikon digital tutor site

Every time I show this site to someone they are amazed and all had no idea it even existed. This is clear proof to me that Nikon does not do a very good job of educating it customers about all the things that are available to help photographers.

I found this page after near an hour of trying to find a page I got to only last friday that now shows "moved or does not exist". I nikon website that I see is a brocure riden thing that is of no use for anyone that actually already owns anything produced by nikon. For instance; I found by direction a set of NX how to videos that I had no idea existed last friday with help for Mr. Ziser. I copied the page to save and today it does not exist. Yet, I can "find my Nikon" in the bar at the page header. I KNOW WHERE MY NIKON IS!!! It is in the safe. I want to find SOMETHING other than sales info. Can this be shown somehow? I see the comment above that others did not know things existed either. I do wish you well and I think it a serious commentary that the firm sees the need to have a person deployed to fix this site on a public basis. I do wish you well on your efforts.

Joe,

This is first time Nikon is listening to customer or try to get customer input which is very good sign and step in right direction.

Could we extend this blog for products and services?

If yes, Nikon will get feed back from their regular customer not only pro's.
Now a days regular customer brings the major money to the company.

Please tell us your thoughts.

I understand that if you open blog for products and services, you might be opening the Pandora's box, but Nikon take some criticism from their loyal customers.

KP

Hi, agree with dramroll...please check how Nikon's site looks in Firefox. It would be such a shame to not have this awesome web overhaul you guys did go to waste because in doesn't look right on one of the fastest growing browser in the market.

For example, the D3 minisite on Firefox is really strange in that it doesn't have the black background during the "cool" opening sequence where it shows the "D3" logo shining. Further, it is also not displaying the "quotations" from the featured photographers. Last, there is a strange "white" background on the "home" page once the intro movie finishes loading.

Download Firefox 2 here: http://mozilla.com.

Cheers - {H}

Ground Rules for Your Shot

This blog is a conversation about the NikonUSA.com site redesign and how it can be made better for you. Your feedback on the site is something that we’re taking seriously. We’ll be taking comments you leave and using them as the foundation for future posts. This will help make our collective understanding of the site that much stronger.

The blog is not about Nikon products or the Nikon brand. It's also not about our competitors. So we’ll be reviewing comments to ensure they are within scope, and we’ll do this as quickly as possible. We’ll post the ones that stay on point and incinerate the ones that break the rules. Actually, our accountants say the price of gas for the incinerators is way too expensive right now, so we’ll have put those comments aside for now.

If you have questions about products, services, careers or other company related topics you should visit the Contact Us page of the site for the appropriate contact information.
